The 2018 season saw the introduction of the Halo cockpit protection system, designed to reduce the risk of injury from debris or other objects striking a driver’s head. Sergey Sirotkin was announced as teammate to Lance Stroll, replacing Felipe Massa, who retired from F1 at the end of 2017.
Lance had a difficult start to the year, with multiple incidents limiting him to three consecutive 14th place finishes in the first three races. Following this, he was rewarded his first points of the season, finishing in 8th place in Azerbaijan and later in the season scored his second and final set of points at the Italian Grand Prix, coming home in 9th place.
Sergey got off to an unfortunate start at the Australian Grand Prix, having to retire from the race after a sandwich bag got into his car brake system. He made it into Q2 for the first time in Baku, qualifying 12th but sadly his race ended after a collision with Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso. After the summer break, Sergey scored his first F1 point after being promoted to 10th position following Romain Grosjean’s disqualification for a technical infringement.
After a tough year for the team the 2018 season concluded with Williams finishing tenth in the Constructors’ Championship. Lance finished 18th and Sergey 20th in the Drivers’ Championship.
