In 2016 Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas paired up for the third season in succession. While the driver line-up and regulations remained consistent, the team unfortunately slipped to 5th in the Constructors’ Championship.
Following a steady start to the championship, in which Valtteri secured his and the team’s only podium of the year in Canada, Force India began to close the gap in the fight for 3rd place, with Sergio Perez securing two podiums in Monaco and Baku.
Felipe announced his retirement from the sport prior to the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. An emotional farewell followed at the penultimate race of the year in Brazil, where he retired from the race and walked down the pitlane to a standing ovation from the Mercedes, Ferrari and Williams garages.
The fight for 3rd with Force India went down to the wire, at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately, the fight came to a premature end when Valtteri retired from the race, meaning the team had to settle for 5th in the Constructors’ Championship. Valtteri and Felipe finished the year 8th and 11th respectively in the Drivers’Championship.
